Roy Garcia
Roy Garcia (roy.garcia@cfisd.net) is the Assistant Superintendent for Secondary School Administration in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District in Houston, Texas. Prior to joining Cypress-Fairbanks, he served as principal at South Grand Prairie High School from 1998 to 2005. Roy led his staff through a change process that resulted in being named a High Schools That Work mentor school, a New American High School Showcase Site, a Texas Blue Ribbon School, and a national model for wall-to-wall academies. In addition, South Grand Prairie High School was selected by the George Lucas Educational Foundation as a model for school innovation.
Under his leadership the school successfully divided into five smaller learning communities based around broad, career themes; trained teachers in interdisciplinary and real-world applications; instituted a freshman success course and a senior “next step” course; established a student internship program; a teacher externship program; and increased the number of AP, career and technology, and academy specific electives.
Roy is a past member of the Texas Association of Secondary Schools Principal’s Strategic Planning Team and former Vice Chair of the TASSP Principal Image Committee. He is a member of the Career Academy Support Network Conversation Team. He has served as a content coach for the Maryland State Department of Education’s School Improvement Institutes and has presented at numerous conferences throughout the country sharing his experiences associated with whole-school reform. He was recently selected for Leadership North Houston. Roy has been married for eighteen years. His wife is a third grade teacher. They have two beautiful redheads, a junior in high school and a first grader.
